Does Ginger Help With Hangover Nausea?

The 10-second answer

Ginger is not established as a treatment for nausea caused by a hangover.

The simple answer

Ginger research does not all ask the same question. Evidence for nausea in one setting does not prove it works after alcohol. It does not show that a ginger candy cures a hangover either. There is no quick fix that cancels alcohol's effects.

Myth vs Fact

Myth

All nausea is the same, so one ginger result applies to every cause.

Fact

A result for one cause of nausea cannot be assumed to work for a hangover.

The science

  1. NIH / NCCIHNCCIH's ginger review describes research in pregnancy, motion sickness, chemotherapy and surgery. It does not establish a benefit for hangover nausea, and most studies used supplements rather than foods.
  2. NIH / NIAAANIAAA describes stomach irritation and increased acid release after drinking as contributors to nausea. Its hangover guidance says remedies have not been scientifically proven effective.

This is an evidence limit, not a claim that ginger can never affect a symptom.
