Is a Hangover Really Just Dehydration?
No. Dehydration is one part of a hangover, not the whole story.
The simple answer
Alcohol can leave you thirsty. It can also break up sleep, irritate your stomach, and set off other changes. Water helps with thirst, but it does not erase all of that. If you're looking for a quick fix, there isn't one. Give yourself time, and get medical help if something feels severe or unsafe.
Myth vs Fact
A big glass of water cancels every effect of alcohol by morning.
Water can help with thirst. A hangover has other causes, and water is not a cure.
The science
- NIH / NIAAA Alcohol can increase urination and cause mild dehydration. It can also disrupt sleep, irritate the stomach, raise inflammation and create acetaldehyde as it is broken down.
- Cleveland Clinic Dehydration is one contributor, alongside effects on sleep, inflammation and the digestive system. Symptoms can vary from person to person.
