How Do I Prepare My Body for a Big Night of Drinking?
Go out rested, fed, and hydrated, but prep can't cancel alcohol. To avoid a hangover, don't drink or keep it to a minimum.
The simple answer
Walk in rested, fed, and hydrated. That part is worth doing. But none of it cancels what alcohol does. The only way to avoid a hangover completely is not to drink or to keep drinking to a minimum. Prep may make the night easier, but it does not make more drinking safe.
Myth vs Fact
The right food, vitamins or water beforehand can armor your body against alcohol.
NIH says there is no cure for a hangover other than time, and the only way to completely avoid one is to not drink or to keep alcohol intake to a minimum.
The science
- Cleveland ClinicEating before drinking slows how fast alcohol is absorbed. Cleveland Clinic also says food and coffee are "not miracle cures to help you sober up."
- HealthyWA · NIHHave a good night's sleep or a nap before you go out. NIH notes that alcohol breaks up sleep.
- NIHAlcohol makes you pee more, which leads to mild dehydration, one of several causes of hangover symptoms.
- Cleveland ClinicYour body needs about an hour to process one drink.
- CDCDrinking less is better for your health than drinking more.
