Are There Any Sleep Gummies That Don't Contain Melatonin?
The 10-second answer
Yes, some sleep gummies have no melatonin, but that alone does not prove they work or are safe with alcohol.
The simple answer
A sleep gummy may use ingredients other than melatonin. Read the label to find out what is actually in it. Melatonin-free does not mean free of effects, side effects or interactions. The same rule applies after a night of drinking.
Myth vs Fact
Myth
Melatonin-free means there is nothing to worry about.
Fact
Other sleep ingredients can have risks too.
The science
- NIH / NCCIHNCCIH reviews non-melatonin sleep ingredients, including herbs and amino-acid supplements, and describes limited or inconsistent evidence for many of them. It also lists safety concerns and possible medicine interactions for some ingredients. NCCIH advises telling health care providers about complementary products used for sleep.
- NIH / NIAAANIAAA warns that alcohol can interact with some herbal products and sedating medicines.
The absence of one ingredient cannot establish a whole formula's safety.
