What Does DHM Do to Your Body?

The 10-second answer

DHM is a plant compound being studied, but its effects after drinking are not established in people.

The simple answer

DHM stands for dihydromyricetin. It is one of many compounds plants make. Researchers have studied how it acts in cells and animals. That work does not tell us that a store-bought supplement will change how you feel after drinking.

Myth vs Fact

Myth

A plant compound must have the same proven effect in everyone.

Fact

Where something comes from does not prove what it does in people.

The science

  1. Shen et al. 2012The 2012 Shen study describes DHM as a flavonoid and examines its effects on GABA-A receptors in rat neurons and rat behavior. This is preclinical research, not a clinical demonstration of a human hangover treatment.
  2. ClinicalTrials.govThe registered Phase I study NCT05623501 is designed to investigate safety and how purified DHM moves through the body. A trial registration is a research plan, not proof of benefit.

NIH's PubMed Central hosts the research papers; hosting is not an NIH recommendation to use DHM.
