How Do I Make Sure Everyone Gets Home Safe?
Plan a sober ride before anyone starts drinking. Look out for each other, and don't let anyone drive after drinking, even for a short trip.
The simple answer
Make the plan before the first drink, not after the last one. Choose a sober driver, book a ride, or save a cab number while everyone is clear-headed. Look out for each other. Never get in a car with a driver who has been drinking, and don't let a friend drive after drinking either.
Myth vs Fact
They're fine to drive if it's only been a couple of drinks and a short trip.
CDC says impairment starts below the legal limit, and any alcohol use impairs the ability to drive safely. There is no "fine to drive" amount.
The science
- CDCIn 2022, 13,524 people were killed in US crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers, 32% of all traffic deaths that year.
- CDCMost states set the legal BAC limit at 0.08 (0.05 in Utah), but impairment starts at lower levels.
- HealthyWANever get into a car if the driver has been drinking or taking drugs.
- NIHBlood alcohol can keep rising after the last drink, because alcohol in the stomach keeps entering the blood. Someone who "feels fine" may not stay fine.
