Why Does a Hangover Feel Like Dehydration?
Alcohol makes you lose extra fluid, so thirst, dry mouth and headache feel like dehydration. But other things are happening too.
The simple answer
Alcohol turns down the signal that tells your kidneys to keep water, so you pee more and feel thirsty, sometimes through the whole next day. A hangover also brings tiredness. That matches how dehydration feels. But the same morning your sleep was poor, your stomach is irritated, and your body is dealing with alcohol's by-products. So it feels like dehydration, but that is only part of it.
Myth vs Fact
A hangover is just dehydration, so water fixes it.
Mild dehydration is one of several causes. NIAAA says no remedy has been proven and only time helps.
The science
- NIH / NIAAANIAAA names mild dehydration (from lower vasopressin and more urination) as likely contributing to thirst, fatigue and headache, and lists other causes: disrupted sleep, stomach lining irritation, inflammation, acetaldehyde from alcohol metabolism, and mini-withdrawal.
- NIH / NIAAAHangover symptoms peak when blood alcohol returns to about zero and can last 24 hours or longer.
