Does Activated Charcoal Help With a Hangover?

The 10-second answer

No. Activated charcoal does not absorb alcohol well, and no good evidence shows it prevents or cures a hangover.

The simple answer

Activated charcoal is a fine black powder that emergency rooms use for some kinds of poisoning, because it can bind certain substances in the stomach. Alcohol is not one of them. Alcohol is a small molecule that moves into your blood quickly, and charcoal binds it poorly. By the time you feel hungover, the alcohol has already left your stomach. Charcoal can also keep your body from absorbing medicines you actually need.

Myth vs Fact

Myth

Charcoal soaks up the alcohol in your stomach before it hits you.

Fact

Alcohol passes through the stomach fast and binds too weakly to charcoal for that to work, and charcoal does nothing once alcohol is in your blood.

The science

  1. NIH / NCBI StatPearlsA StatPearls clinical review of activated charcoal lists alcohols, including ethanol, among the substances that charcoal adsorbs poorly, which is why it is not used for alcohol intoxication.
  2. NIH / NIAAANIAAA says no hangover remedy has been scientifically proven effective and that only time helps.
