Do Hangover Drinks Work?
Not proven. Fluids help you rehydrate, but no drink has been shown to prevent or cure a hangover.
The simple answer
Hangover drinks are sold to take before, during or after drinking. Most are water with vitamins, minerals or plant extracts. Drinking fluids is still a good idea, because alcohol makes your body lose fluid and fluids help with thirst and dry mouth. But research has not shown that any drink makes a hangover shorter or milder. Only time lets your body finish clearing the alcohol.
Myth vs Fact
A special drink after a night out cancels the hangover.
Fluids may help you rehydrate, but no drink has been proven to prevent or cure a hangover.
The science
- NIH / NIAAANIAAA says no hangover remedy has been scientifically proven effective and that only time helps.
- NIH / NIAAANIAAA lists mild dehydration as only one of several hangover contributors, alongside poor sleep, stomach irritation, inflammation and a mini-withdrawal, so fluids alone cannot cover the rest.
- Cleveland ClinicCleveland Clinic says sipping water or an electrolyte drink can help with some symptoms, but there is no cure for a hangover.
