Do Hangover Patches Work?
No good evidence. Research has not shown that a skin patch can prevent or cure a hangover.
The simple answer
Hangover patches are worn on the skin and usually contain vitamins or plant extracts that are meant to soak in while you drink. But a hangover comes from what alcohol does inside your body: poor sleep, an irritated stomach, inflammation and the way alcohol is broken down. No health agency says a patch can stop that. So far, no patch, pill or drink has been proven to fix a hangover. Time is what helps most.
Myth vs Fact
Put on a patch before drinking and you will wake up without a hangover.
No patch has been scientifically proven to prevent or cure a hangover, no matter when you wear it.
The science
- NIH / NIAAAThe National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) says many hangover remedies are talked about, but none have been scientifically proven effective, and that only time helps.
- NIH / NIAAANIAAA describes several hangover causes at once - mild dehydration, poor sleep, stomach irritation, inflammation, acetaldehyde exposure and a mini-withdrawal - and no research shows a vitamin patch changes them.
- Cleveland ClinicCleveland Clinic says there is no cure for a hangover, that products marketed as hangover fixes are not proven, and that the body needs time to clear the alcohol.
