Is It True That Alcohol Makes You Sleep Better?
No; alcohol may make you fall asleep faster while making the rest of your sleep worse.
The simple answer
Feeling sleepy is not the same as getting good sleep. After drinking, you may wake more often or wake earlier. You can spend time in bed and still feel tired. Sleep gummies are not a proven way to turn alcohol into better sleep.
Myth vs Fact
A drink helps sleep because it makes me drowsy.
Falling asleep faster does not mean your sleep is better.
The science
- NIH / NIAAANIAAA describes disrupted sleep as a contributor to hangovers: people may fall asleep faster after drinking, but sleep becomes fragmented and waking comes earlier.
- NIH / NCCIHNCCIH's sleep guidance includes avoiding alcohol close to bedtime as part of healthy sleep habits.
This page explains sleep quality, rather than claiming that sleep clears alcohol faster or cures a hangover.
