Can You Take Ibuprofen for a Hangover?

The 10-second answer

Be careful. Mixing ibuprofen with alcohol raises the chance of stomach irritation and bleeding, so it is not a casual hangover fix.

The simple answer

Ibuprofen belongs to a family of pain relievers called NSAIDs. Alcohol also irritates the lining of your stomach. Taking them close together can add to that irritation, and for some people it raises the risk of stomach bleeding. If you take other medicines, have stomach problems, or are just not sure, ask a pharmacist before mixing any pain reliever with alcohol. And remember: no pain reliever fixes the hangover itself. At best it dulls a headache while your body recovers.

Myth vs Fact

Myth

An ibuprofen with water before bed stops a hangover.

Fact

There is no proof that a pain reliever before bed prevents a hangover, and mixing it with alcohol can be hard on your stomach.

The science

  1. NIH / NIAAANIAAA warns that pain relievers such as aspirin and ibuprofen can increase acid release and irritate the lining of the stomach, and says to proceed with caution when using these medications before or after consuming alcohol. Its guide to mixing alcohol with medicines lists stomach upset, bleeding and ulcers as the risks of combining them with alcohol.
  2. NIH / NIAAANIAAA says no hangover remedy has been scientifically proven effective and that only time helps.
  3. Cleveland ClinicCleveland Clinic says there is no cure for a hangover and recommends fluids, food, rest and time.
