Can You Take Acetaminophen for a Hangover?
Be careful. Mixing acetaminophen with alcohol can put extra stress on your liver.
The simple answer
Acetaminophen is the pain and fever reliever in many common products. Your liver breaks down both acetaminophen and alcohol, so doing both at once can strain it. If you are not sure what is safe for you, ask a pharmacist or your doctor. And no pain reliever cures a hangover. Only time does that.
Myth vs Fact
Acetaminophen is the gentle choice after drinking.
It carries its own risk with alcohol, because the liver has to process both at the same time.
The science
- NIH / NIAAANIAAA says the combination of alcohol and acetaminophen can be toxic to the liver, and its guide to mixing alcohol with medicines lists liver damage as the risk when acetaminophen is combined with alcohol.
- NIH / NIAAANIAAA says no hangover remedy has been scientifically proven effective and that only time helps.
- Cleveland ClinicCleveland Clinic says there is no cure for a hangover and recommends fluids, food, rest and time.
